That's Johnny Parsons. He won the Indy 500 in that car in 1950. "Wynn's friction proofing oil" Kurtis-Offenhauser. He is also the pace car driver of 1980.....30 years later.
the 1950 race was rained out after 138 laps making him the winner. race speeds were around 130mph laps.

The 301 turbo. What a giant pile of excrement that engine was. Hard to believe just six years earlier you could have had your Trans Am with a SD455, and nine years later you could get the fantastic 20th anniversary turbo TA. I wonder if we realized how shitty 1980 really was in 1980.

1985 was friggin awesome. 1980 had 70's beardy guys in sweaty discos. just a few years later and things got much better but got 1980 was a turd....except for the win from Rutherford and the Chaparral 2k, the first car that could go flat out the whole way around without lifting.

1979 400 made 225. 1980 301 turbo made 210. It's not so bad, really.

1979's 400 was also available with a four speed, the 301 turbo was slushbox only.
Did you ever drive one? The were TERRIBLE!

By '84 things had turned, by '86 the world was pretty damn awesome!
1980 though? 1975-82 were just horrible.

I would bet, with a swap to a contemporary properly sized turbo and intercooling system....as well as a megasquirt or something for decent management, it might wake it up. Sorting the unsorted.

That's the car I saw a few weeks ago. Still looked great!

Or you could take a '79 with a 400 and swap on some decent heads, a good cam, and intake manifold, reject the carb and throw on some headers and decent mufflers and you've got a fast car with much less money.
Could a 301 be made to run with modern technology? Sure. But they were junk when new.

My Trans Am had the 301 turbo from the factory. I'm almost thankful someone blew it up somewhere before I owned it.

I believe the 400 in 79 was only available with the 4 speed, they were spare engines left over from 1978.
